One of the big reasons I wanted to move to Europe was because of the ease with which I could travel. From Dublin, I can get just about anywhere in Europe in three hours or less (provided aerlingus or ryanair flies there, of course). But, in addition to seeing Europe, I want to see Ireland. Relatively speaking, Ireland may be a small country but they’ve packed a lot into the Emerald Isle.
With friends visiting from NY and LA last weekend, I got the opportunity to see a famous sight here in Ireland – the Cliffs of Moher. We took one of those oh-so-touristy all day bus excursions but honestly, they are a good way to see the sights – someone else does the driving, leaving you free to marvel at the beautiful landscapes, or in my case, nap.
After a short stop in Limerick and some well-timed bathroom breaks, we arrived at the Cliffs in about three hours. That’s right, three hours from the east coast of the country to the west coast of the country. In the States, the same coast-to-coast journey would take about five days.
The Cliffs of Moher are, not surprisingly, breathtaking and beautiful. They reminded me a bit of the Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road in Melbourne, Australia. The path along the edge of the cliffs goes on for a while, so you can treat yourself to views from many different angles. You may need to remind yourself to take a moment to just take in the spectacular view for yourself, rather than snapping photo after photo.
Honestly, I could have used maybe another hour at the Cliffs. We didn’t have time to hike over to O’Brien’s Tower or to check out the exhibition at the Visitor’s Centre. But what I did get to see was pretty awesome.
So, if you are planning a trip to Ireland or if you live here and haven’t ever gotten around to seeing the Cliffs of Moher, I highly suggest you make plans to see this amazing sight.
And now that I’ve seen The Cliffs, it’s time to check some other Irish sights off my list: The Ring of Kerry, Giant’s Causeway, Blarney Castle, Connemara, Glendalough… anyone care to join me?!
